Learn more about Lenox®:
Lenox, one of the finest names in collectibles, and quality manufacturers of fine china, crystal, tableware and gifts that celebrate life, was founded on the American ideals of Walter Scott Lenox, a pottery maker who dreamed of producing American china to rival European ware.
The story of Lenox began in the 1850's in Trenton, New Jersey, a then flourishing center of pottery making. There Lenox became a master potterer and chief designer, incorporating art and decoration at the esteemed Ott and Brewer.
Soon after, Willets Manufacturing Company, a white ware potterer, hired Lenox to develop a line of Balleek - eggshell china with luster glazes. In 1889, Lenox left Willets to become the founder of The Ceramic Art Company, renaming it Lenox in 1894. Under Lenox, this young company broke from tradition, with a studio atmosphere to create elegant pieces reflecting American originality.
The Appropriation Act of 1826 stipulated that furnishings purchased with public funds for the President's house had to be provided by a domestic manufacturer. And in 1917, President Woodrow Wilson's requirements for design, quality and durability led him to commission Lenox to produce the first American-made White House service. Lenox's dream had come true! Every President since has served his guests with Lenox, and today, Lenox is the official crystal for the White House, the Vice President of the United States, the State Department, Congress and all of the United States Embassies around the world.
For over 100 years, Lenox has stood for uncompromising quality - designing and manufacturing America's first fine china, and the world's most precious crystal - for gifts that truly celebrate life.
